>> and i'm paula faris. we begin this monday, the 1st of october, can you believe it? with a new abc news poll it comes just as the presidential candidates come out. >> tahman bradley starts us off from washington. >> reporter: good morning. it's hard to believe that the first presidential debate is on wednesday. mitt romney and president obama have been preparing day and night. with both men saying the other guy is going to do a better job. president obama and mitt romney start the week with a crucial showdown on wednesday at the first presidential debate in denver. at a rally in las vegas, president obama tried to manage the speculations. >> i know the media is speculating who is going to have the best zinger. i don't know about that. governor romney, he's a good debater. >> reporter: as both hunker down for intense practice, the polls

show americans overwhelming with the election and the president lose. in a new abc news/"washington post" poll out this morning, 63% of registered voters expect president obama to win the election. that's his biggest lead so far when it comes to expectations. but looking at like hi supporters, the race is much closer. president obama leads mitt romney by two points. republican governor chris christie predicted romney could close the gap with president obama after a strong showing on wednesday's debate. >> i'm absolutely confident when we get to thursday morning, george. >> reporter: president obama is keeping his answers short and concise. >> the president has got to be president. this is the guy that killed osama bin laden. i think he can stand up to mitt romney but he's got to relax. >> mitt romney keeps hammering president obama's foreign

policy. in a new op-ed, romney calls for a new strategy in the middle east. at the mercy of events rather than shaping them. the supreme court convened for its new term with a full docket of hot-button issues like affirmative action, voting rights and same-sex marriage. in keeping with tradition, some of the justices took part at the annual red mass in washington. the archbishop asked them to folk kiss their ruling on what is best for society rather than what is popular. breaking news overnight from afghanistan. nato said three of its troops have been killed by a suicide bomber in the eastern part of the country. the attacker ran his motorcycle packed with explosives into a u.s. military convoy. the u.s. war reached the grim milestone with the death of an american soldier. the death toll now standing at 2,000. and very fresh revelations in the government's botched gun

tracking program known as fast and furious. with dozens more firearms being linked to crimes in mexico. guns connected to fast and furious have now been recovered at the sites of murders, kidnappings and at least two brutal massacres. there are reports at the airports. in the past two days, loaded guns have gotten past tsa agents. >> reporter: in the latest black eye for tsa, a loaded .38 caliber gun like this went undetected by screeners. richardson mistakenly 234r50u with it from new orleans to newark. just one day earlier in orlando, they missed another loaded gun. this time in a firefighter's carry-on bag. that gun made it on to the plane. >> it's scary. >> i am voiced they missed something like that. >> reporter: some in congress

worry this has all become business as usual. >> unfortunately, the reports i get, it's not just this one weapon. it's hundreds of items every day, but it can't be tolerated. >> reporter: but out for the record on security, the tsa says it had many successes, confiscating 1100 weapons. 28 guns just last week alone. still, it's all the blunders. many say the tsa screeners need better screening themselves. >> i think it goes back to hiring they do. >> as for that officer that let a firefighter wake right through security with a gun, the tsa says the person responsible has been pulled from duty this week with possibly more disciplinary action to come. mark greenblatt, abc news, new york. and drivers in los angeles can expect no more than the usual commuting headache this morning. doesn't say much, does it? but ten miles of the freeway opened overnight well ahead of

schedule. the road was closed all weekend long to allow demolition of the bridge. crews used the closure as an opportunity to repair potholes, trim trees and repaint lanes. they are finally drying out in west central texas after a weekend of floods. the colorado river quickly rose after ten inches of rain fell saturday. residentses were eventually able to return home it was especially frustrating because they've been in a drought. severe weather moving east brings storms to atlanta, tallahassee and mobile. it will spread rain to the carolinas by this afternoon and to d.c. by late evening. thunderstorms possible across south florida. california will bake in record-breaking heat. downtown l.a. could push 100. and it will be san francisco's warmest day of the year so far. cooler in new england and upper midwest. honolulu will be in the mid-80s.

away. the national average this morning is $3.78 a gallon. that's 3 cents less than it was a week ago. now gas prices usually do come down this time of year. and oil prices are falling but aaa says there could be a brief spike first because wholesale gasoline prices are still high. did you get all of that? >> i got all of that. >> okay. good. hospitals better get it right. because of implications. the government expects to hit those facilities with fines that will average more than $200,000 apiece. the hospital industry says patients share some of this blame. and milk prices may double unless the house passes a new farm bill. the old bill expired yesterday. the senate has passed a replacement. without a new law, the federal government would be required to buy dairy products at inflated prices driving up what we pay at the store to more than $6 a

gallon. it's always expensive. and watch out for a worldwide shortage of disposable diapers all you parents out there. a factory that makes a key ingredient exploded this weekend. the super absorbent polymer. >> the "hotel transylvania," $43 million.
